Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit

What to Expect

Puppy visits are jam-packed. They will get a thorough physical exam, you’ll get lots of information for their care, and it’s a time to ask questions of your veterinary team. These initial visits are also your chance to build positive associations between pup and vet, making future visits a breeze.

Bring these things to your appointment:

  • Any vaccination records or medical records you have
  • Your puppy’s pet insurance details
  • The brand name of your puppy’s food (bring a photo of the bag and ingredient list)
  • Anything your veterinary team mention at the time you book your appointment.
  • Lots of treats to reward your dog and make their experience positive
  • A list of questions—so you don’t forget to ask the important stuff

Your veterinarian will cover many topics like:

  • Nutritional requirements for your puppy’s breed—how much to feed and how often
  • Vaccines and vaccine schedule
  • Preventatives for heartworm, flea/tick, and deworming (intestinal parasites)
  • Microchipping
  • Basic grooming instructions: ear cleaning and nail trimming
  • When they are able to go outside and visit other dogs and visit new areas (covered appropriately with vaccinations)
  • Importance of considering pet insurance to prepare for the unexpected

Your veterinarian will also be happy to answer any questions you may have, like:

What are safe chews for your puppy?
How you can safely exercise your puppy
Spay/castration timing, and much, much more!
